This page explains what cookies and similar technologies we use, what each category is for, and how to change your mind at any time. For everything else we do with personal data, see our Privacy Policy.

1. What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file a website stores on your device. Some are set by us, some by the services we use. We also use similar technologies such as pixels, tags and local storage, and where this page says “cookies” it means all of them.

2. Your choice, and how it works here

The cookie banner you see on your first visit lets you accept everything, reject everything, or choose category by category. Rejecting is exactly as easy as accepting: one click each, side by side. Refusing costs you nothing but the personalisation.

To change your mind at any time, click the cookie icon in the bottom-left corner of any page. It opens the same settings panel, shows every cookie we currently use with its purpose and lifetime, and lets you switch any category on or off. Your choice is saved for 180 days, or until you change it again.

3. The categories we use

Strictly necessary

These make the site work. They keep your shopping basket, remember that you are signed in, secure the checkout, remember your cookie choice, and protect our forms from automated abuse. They cannot be switched off, and they are set on the basis of our legitimate interest in providing a working, secure website rather than on consent.

Functional

These remember preferences that make the site more useful, most obviously your language, and let embedded videos play. Switching them off will not break the site but may make it forget things between visits.

Analytics

These tell us how the site is used: which pages are read, how people move between them, where things go wrong, and, through anonymised session recordings and heatmaps, how a page is actually used. We use this to decide what to write and what to fix. This category also covers the behavioural tracking used by our email platform, described in section 5.

Performance

These measure how quickly the site loads and behaves so we can improve it, and include the bot-protection cookies some of our providers set on their own domains.

Advertising

These let us show our advertising on Google and Meta, measure whether it worked, and avoid showing the same thing to someone who has already bought. They may be used to build an advertising profile of you across sites.

Uncategorised

Anything our scanner finds that has not yet been classified. It is treated as non-essential until it is.

4. Who sets them

Alongside our own site, the following third parties may set cookies once you have accepted the relevant category.

The cookies themselves

The list below is generated from the most recent scan of this site by our consent tool and shows every cookie it found, who sets it, and which category it belongs to. The live version, including the purpose and lifetime of each cookie, is in the settings panel behind the cookie icon, which is also where you switch categories on and off. If the two ever differ, the panel is the current one.

5. Email and site tracking, and how they connect

Two things here are worth being explicit about, because most cookie policies bury them.

Our emails contain tracking. When you open one, or click a link in it, we record that. We use it to work out what is useful to you and to stop sending what is not.

If you are a subscriber, your site browsing can be linked to your contact record. Our email platform sets an identifier that connects the pages you view here to the email address we hold for you. That is how we know to send you planning content rather than design content.

This is profiling for direct marketing purposes, and you have an absolute right to object to it. Switch off the analytics category in the cookie settings, unsubscribe from any email, or write to us, and we stop using it. Section 4 of the Privacy Policy has the detail.

6. Managing cookies in your browser

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and every major browser lets you do this. Blocking strictly necessary cookies will stop parts of the site working, in particular the basket and the checkout. Deleting cookies also deletes the record of your cookie choice, so the banner will ask again on your next visit.

7. Changes to this policy

We update this page when the cookies we use change. The date at the top tells you which version you are reading.
